What Guerilla U Provides

What We Provide

Guerilla U was founded in order to provide the much-needed, and hard-to-find information about both K-12 and higher education in the United States.  Don’t expect to get all the details in the press, or in publications that offer rankings and other superficial university information.  In K-12, there is a direct link between community status and the status of the public schools in the neighborhood; it is unlikely that you’ll hear much information to denigrate those schools.  As for universities:  They won’t tell you the percentage of faculty that is hired fifteen weeks at a time, or how many of their professors have no offices and can’t be found on campus.  They won’t tell you that the average graduation rate is now six years and not four.  They won’t tell you that the “majors” many students choose are woefully outdated, and taught in a way that will not provide professional guidance or readiness.  They won’t tell you that students are rarely now exposed to the kinds of broad fields of learning that provide truly expansive intellectual development. They won’t tell you the dangerous habits of the financial aid departments, or the woeful inadequacies of their advising practices. They won’t tell you that the majority of faculty are now low-wage part-time hires while the number of high-paid full-time administrators now not only outnumber faculty on all campuses across the country, but are nearly outnumbering the students.

What are parents and students to do?  Guerilla U offers the answers.  Our Founder, Debra Leigh Scott, offers workshops, presentations, private consultations and strategic counseling to assist parents with their family’s education issues, and to help students decide if and where to access what institutions of higher education have to offer.  An educator and educational activist for over 25 years, Debra has extensive experience that she can bring to bear for the benefit of families and students in searching for the strategies and tactics essential in the successful navigation through our educational systems and programs, and into a bright  and successful future. Debra also has experience working with special needs students, homeschool families, and international students.

Especially For Homeschoolers

As a homeschool parent herself for nearly ten years, Debra has designed state-approved curriculum at all levels from elementary through high school. Individual pre-designed courses are available upon consultation. Individualized curriculum and course design is also available, as Debra works personally with parents and students to create high-quality, interest-driven courses that encourage student engagement and real enjoyment. Consultation for post-high school options is an important part of what is offered, since homeschool learners are often highly independent, and require a highly-personalized plan for continued education.

Especially For K-12 Alternative Learners and Artists

Students who are identified as “special ed” may well be coping with learning “disabilities” (a term that we don’t like at all here at Guerilla U). More likely, they are struggling with learning “differences” – the very real problem of being a person who learns in an alternative way to the method used in the classroom. Equally likely, many of the students identified as “special ed” are students who simply need a different pace, a more individualized experience. Finally, with 15 years experience as a residency arts-educator K-12, Debra knows first-hand that our young artists are often mis-identified as poor learners because their imaginative ways of learning are not properly identified and supported in the typical classroom. With years of experience serving on special education committees, working with her own special ed-identified child, Debra works with families and students who need assistance in these areas. She can consult with the family, coordinate with other professionals to create a support team for both family and student. She can assist with identifying the best supports required for their student in a public school setting, or in locating the best alternatives. With access to high-quality special ed. litigators, educational therapists, medical practitioners and parent organizations, Debra offers a network of excellent support and many years of experience.

For Pre-College, College and Graduate School Information

For students and parents exploring the options for higher education, Debra can provide invaluable inside information about the ways universities in the U.S. are failing students and scholars alike.  She can provide highly personalized advising regarding university options and other alternative forms of education and training for students looking to take advantage of the free tuitions and many other benefits of heading to Europe for higher education.
